The O3b system will combine the global reach of satellite with the speed of a fiber-optic network providing billions of consumers and businesses in nearly 180 countries with low cost, high speed, low latency Internet and mobile connectivity.

Positioned at an altitude of 8,062 km in equatorial orbit, these Ka-band satellites will provide telecommunications and Internet services combining high speed and low costs to billions of people across the world who do not currently have adequate internet access

The satellites were originally to be launched on Zenit-3SL (2) boosters, but changed in 2009 to Soyuz-2.1b Fregat-MT boosters.
